Dorm Room Fund Presents Blueprint Investor Track
According to the National Venture Capital Association, 80% of investment partners at venture capital (VC) firms are white, compared to 3% Black and 3% Latinx. This has large implications for the entire startup ecosystem. Research by MaC Venture Capital and the Kauffman Fellows shows that 70-80% of venture rounds go to companies with White Founding Teams. The same research shows strong evidence of a clear selection bias when it comes to capital allocation: the diversity of our VC teams are affecting the diversity of successful founders. VCs have the power to change this story.
Since the inception of Dorm Room Fund in 2012, we’ve had 250+ student investors join our family, all of whom have gone on to do awesome things in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. About 30% of our partners launch careers in the VC world after graduation, taking on investment roles at places like Bain Capital Ventures, Bessemer, BoxGroup, PayPal Ventures, First Round Capital and Kleiner Perkins. Some DRF alumni have even started their own venture funds!
In 2019, two of our partners, Courtney Andrews and Mario Ruiz, launched the Blueprint Project, a boot camp to help Black, Latinx, and Indigenous founders build the foundation for venture scale businesses. We’ve decided to keep that same energy and try our hand at helping to increase the number of underrepresented investors in the venture ecosystem.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our inaugural Blueprint Investor Track: a 6-week, VC masterclass for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students around the country. Our aim is to provide our cohort with a curriculum, mentorship, and a strong community to develop a ‘blueprint’ on how to jumpstart your journey into venture capital.
Blueprint Investor Track will help participants answer three fundamental questions: What is venture capital? How does it work? What do I need to know to be successful?
We’re partnering with community leaders like, BLCK VC, HBCUvc, LTX VC, and First Round Capital to make their wealth of knowledge more accessible to potential student investors. Our fully-remote course is a community-centric learning environment geared toward shedding some light on the obscurities of venture capital. Our session will focus on topics like how VC funds work, evaluating a startup pitch, sourcing 101, intro to business models, and much more! You’ll be learning from some of the best investors, fund managers, and founders in the game.
Where do you come in? We are looking for an awesome cohort of students to join our inaugural Blueprint Investor Track!
In particular, we are looking for:
- Undergraduate or graduate students with an anticipated graduation year of 2022 or later. (This includes incoming candidates as well)
- Team players with an interest in supporting entrepreneurs and who like to take initiative in helping their peers.
- Hustlers with curiosity about new technology or business trends and a desire to spark discussions and share viewpoints.
And we’ve got skin in the game: all Blueprint Investor Track participants who successfully complete the program will be guaranteed an interview during the Dorm Room Fund 2020 fall investment partner recruitment process.
It takes a village to create a new reality, and we believe that through bold and genuine efforts, we can build a more equitable venture landscape. We’re excited to take on this new challenge and advance our community into a more diverse future!
